Intro to Design
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course will introduce students to the basic elements and principles of two-dimensional Design. Students will engage in craft-based  explorations of how formal relationships affect visual communication.

COURSE GOALS
-To approach image-making as an unfolding conversation between design elements.
-To analyze compositions for their formal characteristics, and how these relationships more- or less-effectively further the the image’s intended purpose.

GRADING
40%  In-Class Participation. Tardiness or long absences will drop daily grade to C or below.
40%   On-time, satisfactory completion of Homework Assignments
20%   Overall Comprehension and improvement of skills throughout the semester

ATTENDANCE
3 absences are allowed for any reason. 4 Absences will result in a failing grade. There are no “excused” absences.
    
MAKEUPS
If you miss a class, you aren’t responsible for the Homework assignment given that day. But you ARE responsible for turning in the HW assigned on the last day you were in class. That must be turned in when you return. No makeups are otherwise allowed.

POLICIES
  1. Come to class prepared and ready to work with the appropriate materials.
  2. Cell phone use in class will hurt your Participation grade.
  3. Your clothes will get dirty.
  4. Keep the studio clean and your materials and work well organized.

Needed CLASS #2:
11 x 14” 100 lb Bristol board pad ($6)
9 x 12” Black construction paper pad ($2)
8x10” or larger Sketch Book - white, unlined pages for sketches and class notes ($10)
Exacto knife and extra # 11 blades ($5)
Pencils of varying hardness- 2H, HB, 2B, 4B ($4)
metal Pencil Sharpener ($2)
White Eraser ($1.50)
12"  or larger ruler ($5)
Black Micron pens .03, .05 ($5)
Black Sharpie ($2)
masking or artist’s tape ($2-8)
white glue, rubber cement, OR Acrylic Matte Medium (8oz bottle) ($2-20)
Container to hold your supplies, tackle box ($10)

Needed for Week#4:
cheap set of acrylic paints or individual colors (white, red, yellow, blue, black) ($10)
3+ synthetic brushes, two “flat” of different sizes, and one “round” ($10)

Optional:
Scissors ($4)
Portfolio (Free-$100) Keep your assignments flat, dry, and safe. Two sheets of cardboard will make a good porfolio, or simply sandwich past assignments in your bristol pad.
